Recent Explorations in Engraving, carving and Inlay

I have been wanting to do this for decades and have finally had the chance to pursue it. There is something about the effect of contrasting inlaid metals, with relief sculpted detail that makes such a powerful statement. Perhaps it is something about the gravity of steel: the potential and the power, or various metal’s ability to accept and display detail. Or is it the contrast of its malleability and its hardness, or its ability to polish to a mirror luster or retain an intriguing texture?

Stages in the inlay process. Starting from the left, the ground is engraved from a piece of steel, then the pattern is pierced from copper and fit to the engraved depression. Finally the relief detailing is engraved onto the copper. Dimensions of inlay: 20 x 22 mm

For the past year and a half I have been steadily continuing with this exploration and incorporating it into my work. I am indebted to master silversmith and engraver Angus McFadyen for his generous guidance and inspiration for these explorations. I have had the honor of undertaking some exciting commissions and will be sharing more about them when I am allowed. Please get in touch to let me know your thoughts and suggestions.
