Caping Knife

Caping Knife

This knife is a combination of salvaged high-carbon steel sheets, Nubian buffalo horn, and solid brass. The blade is forged from a billet of mosaic damascus steel. To make this billet I began with a stack of alternating layers of two types of steel that I salvaged from particular types of large bandsaw blades. This was then forge-welded to form a solid bar, which was then re-cut and re-forged numerous times to create a 4-fold repeat pattern visible on the end of the bar. The challenge is then to force that pattern to reveal itself on the side of the bar, to allow it to show up on the blade. This is done by using a process known as the Ferry-flip, in which the bar is cut diagonally into a series of pieces, which are then each flipped and then forge-welded back together as a series of scarf joints. This aligns the pattern, as a series of repeating ‘tiles’ onto the broadside of the bar.
